Geocaching Road Trip Project

7th grade social studies classes at Wilde Lake Middle School are participating in a "virtual" race across the United States into Canada. We purchased 10 “travel bug” identification
tags from geocaching.com that
we attached to some special mementos from Wilde Lake Middle
School. We sent each bug on a quest to reach California and then Canada by June 2012.
Each travelbug will be trackable through this website and by logging into geocaching.com. The journey of the travelbugs will be tracked with Google Maps and Google Earth downloadable files. There is no guarantee that any bug will reach its ultimate destination, but it will be fun tracking their progress. If a bug does make it to its destination, we would like a photo of it sent to us and then try to send it back to Wilde Lake Middle School, in Columbia, Maryland.
How will this work? We placed several travel bugs from Wilde Lake Middle School into a hidden cache near our school. Other travelbugs were taken to destinations closer West by faculty on vacation during Spring Break 2011. When a geocacher finds the bug using their GPS or enabled smartphone, he or she will log into geocaching.com and enter the bug’s code. The geocacher will then place it in a new cache closer to the bug's goal. Hopefully the bugs will arrive in California or Canada before the end of the current school year (June 2012). This project has taken months but the fun is to watch where they end up. The ultimate destination will be revealed as a cache site in California and then Canada.
We placed all of our travelbugs in caches on or around April 20, 2011. We marked our travelbugs as school projects, which may or may not expedite their travel a bit.
